The scope of services provided to their clients extend from initial concept design, through manufacture to in-service support, and cover a range of customer requirements, from the design of small mechanical components to large complex structural component (the latter typically include aircraft wing and fuselage sections in either metallic or advanced composite materials).
Role purpose
The functional role of Technical Specialist is responsible for the capability of the stress staff within teams of the company's business. This includes developing staff levels and competencies sufficient to support current and future business needs. Through Technical Leadership the job holder ensures that technical solutions applied in the projects meet all specific project technical requirements regarding weight, strength and performance, ensuring that the conceptual and detail design aspects meet all the requirements, demonstrated via the design review process work in conjunction with Team Leaders and Lead engineers. Knowledge The role of requires technical decision-making capability in the given discipline therefore extensive experience in an engineering environment is essential. Therefore previous experience of holding a position of Technical Authority/Approval would be preferred. Due to the personal development aspects of the role the Technical Specialist must possess demonstrated people and communication skills in order to ensure the design teams meet and support the ongoing needs of the business across a range of products and industries (e.g. aerospace, marine). Although wider business experience not essential, the role will involve liaison with practically all other business departments on a day-to-day basis at team level. Responsibilities: - The key accountability for the Technical Specialist is the Technical Governance of the solutions developed within the Project Teams. This is to be achieved through the development and alignment of core competencies in a manner that facilitates delivery. As such the Governance is to be achieved through the participation in technical reviews where requested by the Team Leader or Lead engineer. - The Technical Specialist should take the lead in development of the skills of the team members. - Good communication skills and a willingness to pass on knowledge and develop individuals within the team are considered key to success. - Ability to write methodologies and check that the teams are producing designs that meet requirements is a high priority in this role. - The development of key processes and procedures is core to the role. Through the capture of best practice within a project and the implementation of LEAN, efficiencies in toolsets, performance and methods can be captured and disseminated across the wider engineering business via the Technical Specialists Forum. - The Technical Specialist is required to maintain regular interfaces within the team to ensure technical programme requirements are achieved and approved in accordance with Customer/company requirements. Typically these may include: - Chief Stress Engineer - Lead Engineer - Team Leader - Technical Specialist forum - Other departmental tech specialists (Design, ME, KBE)
The programme requirements are frequently prepared against inflexible and tight schedules and will thus often require a personal level of flexibility to support the Company and Customer requirements. The ideal candidate will thus have: - A degree, HNC or equivalent - Enthusiasm. - Strong technical knowledge and governance capability. - Good technical leadership skills. - A recognised Expert level knowledge of the department toolset (Mathcad, Nastran/Patran, etc). - Programme/project management skills. - Flexible approach to internal and external commitments. - Customer respect. - Good organisational skills (personal and inter-personnel).
