Senior Design Engineer - Lancashire


A Worldwide manufacturer of components for the Aerospace Industry

Job Purpose

-          To design and develop products for the company group that are cost effective, high quality, simple to manufacture / service and that meet the requirements of the associated Customer / Technical specifications.

-          To support manufacturing in problem solving, dispositioning and taking corrective actions.

-          To act as a focal point for Customers and Suppliers on design related issues.

-          To plan, track and drive design activities to ensure their timely completion.

Key Responsibilities

-          To investigate potential design solutions for new components / assemblies and modifications to existing components / assemblies.

-          To optimise the design solution selected for each component / assembly, based on the correct balance of cost, quality, manufacturability, serviceability and performance.

-          To support the preparation of DCR’s and CAD’s and to provide design rationale for / against the Engineering Change through opinion sheets.

-          To produce engineering schemes, models and drawings for components / assemblies in line with the requirements of the Programme.  To produce supplementary drawing sheets (e.g. PLIF’s / Nomenclatures).

-          To provide structured problem solving (8D) support to manufacturing areas and to resolve any identified design issues.

-          To provide dispositions to manufacturing non conformances and to define repair solutions where necessary. 

-          To complete design related Corrective Actions resulting from manufacturing non conformances.

-          To manage the Digital Mock Up and to ensure that clashes are detected and resolved.

-          To plan the design related activities on the Programme, ensuring these fulfil the requirements of the master schedule for that Programme.

-          To check and approve schemes, models, drawings and supplementary data sheets, ensuring adherence to approved methodologies and technical specifications.

-          To work rigorously to company group procedures.

-          To interface with Customers and Suppliers on design issues on the Programme.

-          To provide evidence of design compliance with Customer / Technical specifications.

-          To support the sub contracting of manufacturing packages on the Programme, providing technical support on Make / Buy decisions, package transfers and ensuring the resolution of any associated problems.

-          To support PSE in the definition of repair solutions relating to In Service problems.

-          To support Spares in the resolution of design related problems.

-          To monitor progress against these plans and to provide regular feedback on progress to the Project Manager.

-          To plan / provide design inputs to Technical Reviews.

-          To manage stacked tolerances within specification, maintaining documentary evidence, in order to ensure compliance with Customer Interface Control requirements.

-          To define, monitor and progress weekly design deliverables on the programme and to provide regular feedback on progress to the Engineering Project Manager.

-          To manage Time & Attendance, Time Booking and Holidays for the team.

Essential Skills

-          Experience in aeronautic design with evidence of a senior role

-          Extensive experience in Computer Aided Design, utilising CATIA and/or CADDS5

-          Excellent knowledge of Composite and Metallic structures and materials

-          Excellent knowledge of Design principles and material selection

-          Excellent knowledge of Tolerance management

-          Good understanding of stress principles

-          Good understanding of manufacturing processes and techniques

-          Excellent communication skills

-          Good time and priority management skills

-          Advanced Project Management skills

-          Intermediate Planning and Organisation skills

Qualifications
-          Minimum HND qualification (or equivalent); or relevant experience

Or B Eng degree
